A Hurricane, Flooding, and a Funeral
A week ago Friday, we were expecting Houston to get some rain. I went to the store by 7am to get some milk, eggs, bread and snacky things so we could be prepared. Soon after I returned, my husband let me know that his mother had called. Her mother was in poor health and it looked like this was the end. So instead of hunkering down for Harvey, we headed east to Louisiana.
Luckily they got there in time to say goodbye and be with family in the end. And we watched Hurricane Harvey make landfall while following the crazy (and Emmy award winning) Jeff Piotrowski in Rockport.
And then we sat helpless watching Houston flood and hearing moms in my neighborhood worry if this tornado warning was a real, real threat, or just headed somewhere else in the county.
We are still in Louisiana, nine days later.
The funeral was two days ago.
Our house back home is fine.
But where do we go from here?
I follow Facebook as I can, sharing articles that might be helpful. I have bought a t-shirt, some RTIC tumblers, and donated some money.
But as a small business person myself, I want to do more.
I sell organic skincare. Organic might not be the first thing on people’s lives right now. Survival is. And rebuilding. But face wash and body wash are still helpful to those in shelters.
So this is my plan…
- 100% of my commissions for the month of September will go to JJ Watt’s Hurricane Relief Fund.
- I will personally match the amount of that donation with a donation to Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.
- Party Rewards will be used to buy skincare kits that can be donated to Common Threads, the donation center for my local school district.
- I will also buy as many of our “thank you gifts” as possible to be donated to Common Threads. (These thank you gifts include face washes and body washes that are travel sized.)
How Can You Help?
** If you need a new night cream, moisturizer, or face scrub purchase during the month of September. Even better, use this direct link.
**If you would like to add any amount to your donation, contact me directly here. You could add a few dollars for more skincare kits, more travel size toiletries, or a bigger donation (which will be matched).
Looking Forward
Houston is resilient. We are helpful and loving toward each other. We will get through this.
