Have you ever tried one of the grocery box delivery services? I love to cook, but sometimes it takes too long! I have done lots of freezer prep workshops in the past (more on that later) but I had never done one of the commercial meal prep deliveries until a few weeks ago. I decided to try an organic meal delivery since I think it is important to do as much organic as possible. Here are the meals I did with Green Chef.
Why did I choose Green Chef?
- Their kits are 90-95% organic. I was pretty impressed with this number. They actually work with the National Organic Program to be leaders in food transparency and traceability
- They have a variety of meals plans available. I chose the Paleo plan because if I was getting the ingredients and menus delivered to me, I wanted them to be super healthy and things that I might not be cooking myself. But they have the following plans:
- Carnivore (In the Omnivore and Carnivore plans, you can choose to select or not select the following proteins: Beef, Poultry, Pork, Lamb, Fish, Shellfish, Game.)
- Gluten Free
- Also, the individual menus that I saw looked really good.
Great Customer Service
Along the way, I was pretty impressed with the Green Chef customer service. I chose Friday as the delivery day for our first box. We ended up unexpectedly leaving town a few hours before it was to be delivered. So I emailed the company and they applied my credit to a new box and told me to give the box on my porch to someone else. This was right before Hurricane Harvey hit, so I was happy to be able to share food and it was also very generous of the company to help me get a second try.
My Three Meals
Green Chef has two servings options: The Two Person Plan gives you three meals a week for 2 people. The Family Plan gives you two meals a week for four people. You can also request more boxes per week to get you more food. We opted for the two person plan. I wasn’t sure that the girls (ages 1 and 3) would be too excited about the Paleo plan. Plus, they don’t eat that much and I was prepared to supplement their dinners with their favorites.
Our box of meals was delivered on a Friday when we were out of town. (Why didn’t I learn?) But at least this time we were expected back on Sunday instead of being out indefinitely, so I had a neighbor put the food in the fridge.
Monday: Cumin-Ancho Sirloin Steak
This was super yummy and had me trying a new type of squash that I now can’t find in the regular store. <sad face> So if you know where to find Delicata squash please let me know! It was totally enough food for two adults. I had trouble finishing mine, in fact. We had extra salad and squash leftover. The girls didn’t eat much of this because of the spicy nature of the salad and steak. I tried to introduce them to the squash, but they turned out to not love it like I did.
Wednesday: Moroccan Chicken Tagine
This was also a good meal. This was the only meal of the three with no salad, which was nice to do in the middle of the three. The spices were fabulous. Well, for me. My husband doesn’t care that much for cinnamon, so anything like this is destined to be not his favorite. We actually shared a chicken breast for dinner and then I had the rest with leftover turnip couscous and zucchini the next two days for lunch. So we got four meals out of this meal. Win!
Thursday: Maple-Mustard Salmon
This again came with salad that was delicious. But the salmon was the best thing about the meal. I cooked it perfectly by…. errrr… following the directions on the recipe card. First you sear the salmon and then top it with the sauce and finish under the broiler. So easy! And it was delicious. I am NOT into mustard. For real. But this was delicious and we both ate all of our salmon up.
I was overall so happy with the food quality, materials given, and recipes at Green Chef. At this point, I don’t have any other meal companies to compare it to but I am happy here with this organic meal delivery service.
